Vision Northland is massive new hospital for Essentia Health and St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota. Upon completion, the hospital will be one of tallest building in the region, stretching 350+ feet from the ground floor. It has 3 entrances, the Outpatient wing facing the lake, the Emergency Department underneath 1st Street’s overpass, and the Inpatient Tower on top of the hill.
I was part of this project for EwingCole from Concept Design Phase through Construction Administration. I had a professional relationship with many of our product reps and our CM, even working with them in Minneapolis on occasion. My role was a critical member of the Core/Shell team on the project, and also as BIM Manager for the entire project. One of EwingCole’s largest projects ever, this was a work of intrepid coordination between multiple internal disciplines and engineers, and a handful of external consultants.
I developed project wide standards for documentation, presentation, and modeling. My role varied from designing interior and exterior spaces and the facade; detailing and innovating for critical exterior systems; navigating the world of clash detection and cloud-shared model coordination with consultants as varied as snow/ice protection, elevators, and helipad design; code analysis and research, developing proposals, narratives, and presentation documents for the client; and collating our 1000+ page issuances for the contractor and AHJ.
